Stories

People watch horrors to get scared. Fear is an emotion that arrives when we are in a situation we would rather not be in. So people deliberately enter situations they would rather not be in. It is true, as Aristotle says, that „in representation even that which is ugly is beautiful“ and that which is unpleasant is pleasant. But the more real a horror is the better it is. Fairy tales affect our imagination (representation). Horrors on the contrary affect directly our nerves (direct reaction, cf. A.Artaud).

The people who come to watch a horror expose themselves to a paradoxical situation, in which their being and non-being is at stake in a game of simultaneous wanting and not wanting, staying and fleeing, self-destruction and self-preservation. They voluntarily enter a situation that can destroy or change them. No one knows if they will return from the cinema or if they will not return insane or as someone else. However they might also return as someone better, because, as Aristotle says, horrors “through fear and pity effect purification”.

The horror story characters themselves are double: they are revolting, low, invisible, ungraspable, and at the same time they are heroes, our house pets. Through horrors we learn to love even the hated, to understand the possibility of evil, to see the world through the eyes of a monster and thus to overturn and revaluate old values.

The meaning of a musical horror story is the following: there are too many experiences that could be lived, too many stories that should be written, too many songs that should be recorded. So here is an attempt to sample experiences musical, visual and verbal and to give you a chance to become, at least for a minute, an invisible man, a cannibal…

The horror story band is a unique art project started by the Czech group eggnoise. On the thirteenth of every month a short song will appear on these web pages along with a short video and a story. We would like to make this an interactive project and you are most welcome to participate in the music, video (especially the video) and story making process.
